Phone Swap and Resale Value in Nigeria: What Your Phone Is Really Worth
Swap means trading your current phone plus a cash top-up for a different one. What decides whether it is a good deal is a number nobody tells you: the gap between what your phone is worth privately and what a dealer will give you for it.
From the listings we checked on 11 September 2026, that gap is about 17%. This page shows how to work out your own number before you walk into a negotiation.
Most used sellers will swap, which means you have leverage
| Model | Accept swap | Will not | Share accepting |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro | 59 | 18 | 77% |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | 87 | 35 | 71% |
| iPhone 17 | 19 | 9 | 68% |
Roughly seven in ten used sellers will take a trade. If you have a decent phone to give, you are not a normal buyer, you are a buyer who solves the seller’s next problem for them, and that is worth negotiating with.
What your phone is actually worth
Two different numbers, and confusing them is how people lose money.
- Private sale value: what a buyer on Jiji pays you directly. Higher, slower, more effort.
- Trade-in value: what a dealer gives you. Lower, immediate, no strangers in your house.
We can put a figure on the difference. Among used iPhone 17 listings, bulk and wholesale offers clustered at about ₦840,000 for clean 256GB units, while the typical retail price for the same phone was ₦1,010,000. A dealer therefore buys at roughly 83% of retail: and that 17% spread is their margin.
| Your phone (256GB) | Private sale, expect | Dealer trade-in, expect | You give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | ₦1,650,000 | about ₦1,370,000 | ₦280,000 |
| iPhone 17 Pro | ₦1,500,000 | about ₦1,245,000 | ₦255,000 |
| iPhone 17 | ₦1,010,000 | about ₦840,000 | ₦170,000 |
If a dealer offers you meaningfully less than 83% of the private figure, they are taking more than the normal margin. Say so.
Working out your top-up
The arithmetic is simple once you have both numbers:
Top-up = price of the phone you want − trade-in value of the phone you have
Worked example. You have a used iPhone 17 Pro 256GB and want a used iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB:
- Pro Max you want, used typical: ₦1,650,000
- Your Pro, traded in at 83%: ₦1,245,000
- Fair top-up: ₦405,000
If you sold the Pro privately at ₦1,500,000 first and then bought the Pro Max, your net cost is ₦150,000, about ₦255,000 better. That is the price of convenience, and now you can decide whether it is worth it rather than discovering it afterwards.
What destroys your value
| Problem | Effect on what you are offered |
|---|---|
| Still signed into your Apple Account | No serious dealer will take it at all |
| Battery health below 85% | Drops you to Grade C pricing |
| Cracked screen | Cost of the replacement, plus a penalty |
| Non-original parts | Grade C, and some dealers refuse |
| Unpopular colour | Small, but real, slower to move |
| No box or cable | Minor, but it is free to keep them |
On colour: among used iPhone 17 Pro Max listings, Cosmic Orange led with 85, ahead of Silver at 53 and Blue at 45. Common colours resell faster. It is not a reason to choose a phone, but it is worth knowing when you are the one selling.
Preparing a phone for swap
- Back up first. Everything you want to keep, off the phone.
- Sign out of your Apple Account. Settings → your name → Sign Out. This is not optional, leaving it signed in makes the phone activation-locked and worthless to the buyer.
- Erase it properly. Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.
- Screenshot the battery health before erasing. It is your evidence in the negotiation.
- Clean it and find the box. Costs nothing, moves the number.
- Know your figure before you arrive. Walking in without one is how you get the 60% offer.
When swapping is the wrong move
- When the upgrade is small. Paying ₦405,000 to move from a Pro to a Pro Max buys you a bigger screen and the same chip and RAM. Check what actually changes first.
- When you would be buying used at a new-phone price. A new iPhone 17 at ₦1,400,000 undercuts a used iPhone 17 Pro at ₦1,500,000.
- When you have time to sell privately. That 17% is real money for a few days of messages.
- When the top-up is going on credit. We are not financial advisers, but a depreciating phone funded by an appreciating debt is a bad trade in any currency.
Frequently asked questions
How is phone swap value calculated in Nigeria?
Take the current used market price for your exact model and storage, then expect a dealer to offer about 83% of it, the observed wholesale-to-retail ratio. Your top-up is the price of the phone you want minus that figure.
How much is my iPhone 17 Pro Max worth in Nigeria?
A clean unlocked 256GB unit sells privately for about ₦1,650,000. A dealer trading it in will typically offer around ₦1,370,000. Battery health below 85%, a cracked screen or replaced parts move both figures down.
Is it better to swap or sell outright?
Selling privately gets you about 17% more. Swapping is faster and safer. On an iPhone 17 Pro Max that difference is roughly ₦280,000, worth a few days of effort for most people, but not for everyone.
Will a dealer take a phone that is still signed into my iCloud?
No serious one will. Sign out and erase the phone before you go, or the offer will be low or refused outright.
Resale figures on this page are the same verified used prices published on our device pages, checked 11 September 2026. Trade-in figures are derived from the observed dealer ratio and are marked as such. See our Pricing Methodology.
