How to Spot a Fake or Parts-Swapped Phone in Nigeria
“Fake” covers four different problems in the Nigerian phone market, and only one of them is an outright clone. The other three are genuine handsets being sold as something they are not.

That last one is more common than people assume, and it is not always deliberate. While collecting prices on 11 September 2026 we found a Jiji listing titled “iPhone 17 Pro Max 256 GB” whose own description said 512GB, and Konga listings with the RAM and storage labels transposed, “512GB RAM, 12GB ROM”. If the listing cannot keep its own specification straight, verify the handset yourself.
The IMEI check, first and always
Dial *#06#. The IMEI shown on screen must match three things: the number in Settings → General → About, the number printed on the box, and the number on the SIM tray or back of the handset where present.
A clone will often show an IMEI that does not match the box, or the same IMEI as another unit the seller has. A genuine phone with a mismatched box has been re-boxed, which tells you the packaging is not evidence of anything.
iPhone: four checks that catch almost everything
- Parts warnings. Settings → General → About. Scroll to the bottom. Non-genuine displays, batteries and cameras are flagged here. This is the single most useful screen on a used iPhone.
- Face ID. Register your own face. Face ID failing is the classic sign the phone has been opened and the front assembly disturbed.
- Battery health. Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. On a clone this menu does not exist at all.
- Serial check. Take the serial from Settings → General → About and check it on Apple’s own coverage page. A serial Apple does not recognise is decisive.
A clone fails check 3 or 4 within a minute. Parts-swapping is the one that needs check 1, and it is the one most likely to be quietly present on an otherwise genuine UK-used handset.
Android: the certification check
Open the Play Store → profile icon → Settings → About → Play Protect certification. A genuine device from a real manufacturer will say certified. Most clones are not, because they were never submitted to Google.
Then check the basics against the manufacturer’s published specification: screen size, resolution, chipset and camera count. Clones typically get the shell right and the internals wrong, the giveaway is usually the screen, where a cheap panel shows visible pixels and poor viewing angles that the real model does not have.
Check the storage you paid for
Storage is the easiest specification to lie about and the easiest to verify. On iPhone, Settings → General → iPhone Storage shows the true capacity. On Android, Settings → Storage.
Expect the figure to be somewhat below the advertised number, a 256GB phone shows around 245GB usable, because the operating system takes space. What should worry you is a “512GB” handset reporting 119GB. That is not formatting overhead, that is a different phone.
The price difference is worth checking for: on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, 256GB and 512GB are about ₦210,000 apart new.
Price is a signal, not proof
A clone is usually priced far below the real market, but so is a locked handset, and those are far more common. When you see a price 30% or more under the cheapest legitimate listing, the order to check is: locked first, then storage, then parts, then clone.

Where the risk concentrates
- Sealed boxes at street prices. A factory-sealed flagship well below retail is either a resealed refurbished unit or not the phone on the box. Genuine sealed stock does not undercut Jumia by 40%.
- Delivery-only sellers. If you cannot run the checks before paying, you have no checks.
- Listings that will not state condition. We exclude these from our own price data for exactly this reason.
- “Bulk price” listings sold as single units. Wholesale pricing on a one-off sale usually means the unit is not what the wholesale listing described.

If you have already bought one
- Go back to the seller immediately, with the specific failed check documented. “Play Protect says uncertified” is harder to argue with than “it feels fake”.
- If you bought through a marketplace, open a dispute there before contacting the seller privately.
- Photograph the IMEI, the storage screen and any parts warning. That is your evidence.
- Do not accept a “top up and swap” offer from the same seller. It is the same seller.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if an iPhone is fake in Nigeria?
Check Settings → Battery for Battery Health & Charging, and Settings → General → About for parts warnings and the serial number. A clone has no Battery Health menu and a serial Apple does not recognise. Both checks take under a minute.
Does a sealed box mean the phone is genuine?
No. Resealing equipment is cheap and widely available. Treat a sealed box as packaging, not proof, and be especially careful when sealed stock is priced well below mainstream retail.
Is a phone with a replaced screen still worth buying?
It can be, at the right price. A non-original screen is a Grade C feature, it should come with a discount, and it should be disclosed. What makes it a problem is paying Grade A money for it.
How do I check the real storage on a phone?
