What to check before you pay

   Check whether it is refurbished. Oppo’s A series is one of the most heavily refurbished ranges sold in Nigeria. Look for mismatched screws, a replacement screen with a slightly different colour temperature at the edges, and a back cover that sits proud at one corner. Ask for the original box and match the IMEI on it.

   Oppo and Google account locks. Settings, then Users and accounts. Both the seller’s Google account and any HeyTap or Oppo account must be removed. A locked ColorOS device cannot be reset past the setup screen.

   ColorOS version and security patch. Settings, then About device, then Version. If the security patch is more than a year old, Oppo has stopped updating this model. That is not a reason to walk away on a cheap handset, but it should be reflected in the price.

   Check the network bands. Units imported for the Indian, Chinese or Middle Eastern market sometimes drop the bands MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile actually use here. Dial *#*#4636#*#* and open phone information, or check the model code against Oppo’s own regional listing. A phone that only ever shows 3G in Lagos is usually a wrong-region unit.

   Battery and fast charging. Oppo’s selling point is SUPERVOOC charging, and it is also the first thing to degrade on a used unit. Bring your own compatible charger and confirm it actually pulls the advertised wattage rather than falling back to 10W.
