- 04Google account lock. Settings, then Accounts. If the seller’s Google account is still signed in, the handset locks itself at the next factory reset and nobody can recover it. Make them remove the account in front of you, then reset the phone yourself before money changes hands.
- 05Verify the IMEI on Xiaomi’s own checker. Dial *#06#, then check the number against Xiaomi’s official verification page. Counterfeit Redmi units are common in the lower range and they are convincing enough to pass a settings screen.
- 06Check the network bands. Units imported for the Indian, Chinese or Middle Eastern market sometimes drop the bands MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile actually use here. Dial *#*#4636#*#* and open phone information, or check the model code against Xiaomi’s own regional listing. A phone that only ever shows 3G in Lagos is usually a wrong-region unit.
