With a 1080 x 2340 pixels display measuring a hefty 6.7 inches, the Phantom X has one of the best screens you’ve seen on a Tecno phone yet. Instead of the IPS LCD that has become Tecno’s signature panel, this phone uses a Super AMOLED display that refreshes at 90Hz, bringing a legion of possibilities to the device’s screen.

If the Tecno Phantom X truly tries to showcase the best Tecno can do in smartphone design, we’ll give them an A for the screen, as it’s gorgeous.

Battery

It’s no secret that Tecno uses a 4700 mAh battery on most of its phones, but when designing something to compete with Samsung, being different is imperative. In this case, the difference is worse, as Tecno downgrades from 5000 mAh to 4700, not the kind of decrease you’ll notice in day-to-day usage.

Before you crucify Tecno, note that most Samsung and Apple flagships have similar cell sizes, so it’s not a Tecno thing. Also, the Tecno Phantom X charges via USB Type-C, and it supports 33W fast charging that supplies up to 70% juice in 30 minutes.

Processor

The Phantom X uses a Mediatek Helio G95, a gaming chip with eight cores, giving the phone an impeccable performance. Of the eight cores, two are clocked at 2.05 GHz, while the rest run at 2 GHz, making eight energy-efficient but speedy cores.

The phone also features a Mali G76 GPU, the secret behind its excellent performance in top-of-the-line Android games. As long as it’s something from the Google Play Store, you should have no problems running it on the Tecno Phantom X.

Cameras

Being one of Tecno’s most premium offerings, the Tecno Phantom X has three proper lenses on the back for photos and videos. There’s a 50 MP wide camera with dual pixel autofocus that serves as the primary shooter, a 13 MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom, and an 8 MP ultrawide camera for wide shots.

Thanks to this setup, you can shoot 4k at up to 60fps on the Phantom X. The selfie camera setup is a bit less beefy, featuring only two cameras: a 48 MP main and an 8 MP ultrawide for wide selfies with friends. Also, it can only do a maximum of 1080p at 30fps.

RAM/Internal Storage

The Tecno Phantom X comes only in one variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. That should be enough for most users, but Tecno includes an SD card slot for buyers that store media and lots of heavy files on their devices.

Operating System

As expected, the Tecno Phantom X comes with the full version of Android 11, not the Android 11 Go Edition on many other Tecno phones from its generation. More specifically, it uses an Android skin called HiOS 7.6, Tecno’s unique version of Android 11.

The biggest complaint buyers typically have about the OS is how it’s not upgradable; when you’re paying that much for your Android phone, you naturally expect the manufacturers to release one or two Android updates, but with Tecno, that’s unavailable.

Water Resistance

Something else we expected but didn’t get from the Phantom X is an IP rating, otherwise known as an ingress protection rating. An IP rating measures how resistant a phone is to water and dust, and the absence of one typically indicates that the phone is susceptible to water damage. While we don’t expect IP ratings on Tecno phones, the story changes once Tecno starts selling Samsung-priced phones!

Biometrics/Sensors

Unlike most other phones from Tecno, the Phantom X uses an innovative optical under-display fingerprint sensor for phone and app unlock. An under-display scanner lives under your display, and you can use it by pressing your thumb over the screen in a specified position.

The Tecno Phantom X is one of the few devices from Tecno with this technology, and it works excellently. It also features an accelerometer, a gyroscope, and a proximity sensor.

Price

The Tecno Phantom X is expensively-priced, especially compared to other devices from the same manufacturer. However, it offers enough features to justify that steep price, and if you can live with being stuck on Android 11 for the long term, the Phantom X should work for you.
